Ford Repair: blown head gasket?, blown head gasket, rich fuel mixture

Question
I have a 1982 ford f100 w/h 4.9 6 cyl. Recently the water pump started leaking but the temp guage never never showed hot, when i arrived at work it had began to run rough.I replaced the water pump but it is still running rough. I checked the compression it is between 150-165 on all, could i have a blown head gasket, and if not what could it be. when i pulled the spark plugs to check the compression the #1 and #2 plugs had alot of black carbon. any help please thanks

Answer
You have a rich fuel mixture problem on those two plugs. Giving that it's not fuel injected, problems with a carburetor are not usually isolated to one or two plugs. Start with the simple gasket, like the intake gasket. If you do not see any obvious warping or tears in the gasket, then you must go down to the head gasket. If you have the head pulled, take it to a machine shop and have it checked. Wasting your time installing a warped head is very tedious at best.
