Ford Repair: 99 Ford Escort, engine bearing, mileages

Question
I have a '99 Ford Escort 4Door with about 85,000 miles on it. We've tried to keep up with maintennce on it. I had the transmission fluid flushed a couple of years ago only to have it pour out onto the street when driving the car home. After that, the transmission was checked twice for possible damage but non was found. Otherwise, I haven't had any real problems with the car until last month when the engine tried to stall in idle. I took it to a repair shop where they recommended replacing the fuel filter along with the oil change. That seemed to take care of the problem. Today, when I tried to start the car, it made a sound like maybe a fan belt broke or something. When I tried to start it again, it wouldn't turn over. I had the car towed to a repair shop. After inspecting it, they told me they thought it "threw a bearing" but they would be looking again tomorrow and get back to me. All I can find on the suject talks about clutches. My car is an automatic transmission. Does this sound like they are on the right track? Am I looking for the right term?

Answer
they are talking about an engine bearing which would require either crank kit replacement or engine replacement both expensive-if you have kept up with your maintenance especially oil changes and do have reciepts i would get in touch with the oil manufacturer or ford to see if they will help-for this to work you will need all receipts with mileages and dates and type of oil hopefully one brand. don't expect much but it doesn't hurt to try but if you don't have all receipts and the oil changes weren't done at proper mileages don't even bother trying for help because you would be considered at fault and i agree with that. if you bought it used and don't have previous records it won't do anygood either. let me know what they find. good luck.
