Ford Repair: 02 F-150- Problems starting after it rains., 2000, 2001

Question
Hello Drew,
This problem has happened to me on a few occasions: After a good rain the night before I am unable to start my truck. I open the door to find the electronic odometer on, the a/c blowing and all the check engine/ABS/seat belt lights on as well with no key in the ignition. This usually drains the battery and after a charge I'm back on the road. The problem continues for about a day or so when everything has dried. After reading through a few of your responses I found there to be a few responses that state to check too see if the carpet is wet under the front interior kick panel. This will indicate that the 'A' port roof area/electrical module has water damage. If this is the case, what do I do to prevent the leak? Where should I look?

Answer
Donnie,

When you do an inspection for a water leak intrusion, you should have the interior scuff plate and "A" pillar trim removed so you can see the sheet metal body.
With the interior trim removed, soak the top, front left side of the truck with a garden hose for about 1/2 to 1 hour. Look inside the truck with a flashlight at the floor and at the bottom, front inside of the door area. Look to see if your left side dash mount bolts show signs of rust as this would be a good spot that the water is going.

Things that can be leaking :

(1)Bottom of the "A" pillar seam, high cowl seam to "A" pillar seam(all under your cowl screen). Also, check to make sure the cowl drain is clear of debris.

(2)Front wheel well seam to bulk head seam or plug,(all of which would leak onto the floor and be seen tight to the corner of the bulkhead to cowl section)

(3)Windshield set could be loose or leaking.

(4)Top of the "A" pillar seam,(can see this on the inside of the truck, looking along the sheet metal by the windshield set and at the sheet metal by your parking brake).

If you have a digital camera, you can send me pictures of what you are looking at.
