Ford Repair: Ranger electric odometer, electric speedometer, salvage yard

Question
QUESTION: 1995 Ford Ranger, 2.3, 5-speed manual.

I have an all electric speedometer/odometer.  The speedometer works just fine, but the odometer is dead.  I replaced the whole instrument cluster with another one from a salvage yard with exactly the same results.  I tried a third one -- ditto.
1.  Can I assume that the VSS is OK since the speedometer works?
2.  Can I bench test the odometer to make sure I don't have 3 bad ones in a row?
3.  What else could be causing this problem and how would I troubleshoot it or find it?

ANSWER: vss should be ok-send your cluster out and have it repaired it is a common problem-before you do be sure and check all fuses on your truck underhood and dash. good luck.

QUESTION: Are you saying there may be a fuse that protects the odometer and not the speedometer?  All my research so far indicates an odometer failure.  But three??  It makes some sense that the speedo and odometer run separately since there are four electric contacts going to the gage.

Answer
i doubt that there is a seperate fuse  and i know the odometer is in speedo head which should be same fuse-but over the years i have learned a very important lesson about fuses-before proceeding with any electrical repairs when something isn't working check fuses just in case
i really don't think that is the case with your odometer but is doesn't hurt to check especially when i can't find a wiring diagram for it.
good luck.
