Ford Repair: 92 Ford Probe, timing chain replacement, ford probe

Question
I have a 92 Ford Probe with a V-6. In order to change the water pump does the timing chain have to be removed? How can you tell if the timing is off or if the chain has broken?

Answer
You're year does not require a timing chain replacement to change the water pump. In the 1993 model, the water pump is actually driven by the timing belt. In you're 1992 model, the timing chain is located behind the water pump under the timing chain cover. An easy way to tell if the timing chain is broken would be to take the distributor cap off and turn the motor over. The cam will not be turning if the chain is broken. For future reference, it is a good idea to go ahead and service the timing chain since most of the labor is already done. If you are doing this job yourself, research it heavily before tackling this job. It is not very easy.
