Ford Repair: 1997 Taurus, rear end collisions, wheel drive vehicles

Question
Having some problems with car when its in drive, sometimes when you come to a stop and then step on the gas .thereis a hesitation that will rev the motor then pop into gear, it will also do it sometime when swifting into the 2 gear while going forward. It doesn't happen all the time and sometimes it will go a month without happening. Last night I went to the store ,got in the car ,backed up ,put the car in drive. It seem a little slugiss when I went forward. Icame to stop sign and when I step on the gas the car just rev up. I moved the swifter to park than back to drive and still nothing ,but I could kinda feel it shift. I did have reverse the whole time ,but could not go foward. I parked the car, came back 2 hour later to tow it. I got in the car ,started it and shifted into drive and it went forward like nothing happen. Could this be tranmission, sensor, or something else. The trany was replaced once already. What can I test for? Thanks for any help. P.S. car has 120,000 miles on it. Also the car was hit from behind about a month ago while my wife was at a stop sign, very little damage just a scraped bumber

Answer
Front wheel drive vehicles are very susceptible to transmission failure when in rear end collisions. If the problems did not start until then, that is probably you're answer, either way you are looking at another transmission. For one reason or another the Taurus has a high transmission failure rate.
