Ford Repair: installing a starter solenoid, 66 ford mustang, starter solenoid, haynes manual

Question
I removed my starter solenoid the other day to replace it and fear I have re-installed it incorrectly.  The radio and lights turn on but the engine won't turn over or even attempt to.  Even more confusing, my cab light now stays on.  Please help!

Background:  Leaving the car wash the other day smoke began to rise from the engine.  I quickly turned the ignition off but the car continued, with the belts moving slowly and smoke coming from or near the starter solenoid.  The engine stopped after I removed some wires from the starter solenoid.  I have already checked the battery and the connections and both appear to be fine.

Answer
Remove the starter and have it tested. Check the wiring to the solenoid. Go to the library if you cannot find a haynes manual or do not know how to wire up a solenoid. Water is bad. Work you're way down the harness if still no luck with the starter. Look for a swollen wire.
