I have a 1965 Ford Mustang and I need to replace the fuel filter.  All of my books have instructions and images for an inline, mine is a canister.  I think I have located the housing for the filter, but how to I actual get into it to replace the filter?

I saw you're question in the question pool. The top of the canister should twist off. I know that this is probably easier said than done. Especially if the top hasn't been twisted off for some time. That is one of the main reasons why we got away from using that style. Replace it if necessary. There are plenty of places to find an OEM filter if you need one. YearOne would be one place to start.
