Ford Repair: Ignition control module, mercury sable, haynes manual

Question
QUESTION:  I have a 92 Mercury Sable with a 3.8 engine that is firing intermittently and will not start. I suspect it is the ignition module, or I would at least like to test it. Problem is I cannot find it. It is not on the distributor like I am used to. I have a Haynes Manual, but this time it is not taking me to the Ignition Module. It suggested on some years, it may be in the cowl void, but I am not seeing it. With it being front wheel drive, it is nearly impossible to follow wires around. I consider myself somewhat skilled, but am frustrated with this one.

ANSWER: You're ignition control module is located on the out side of the distributor on you're vehicle. Two bolts hold it on.Any parts store should be able to test it.

QUESTION: James,
Appreciate the speedy reply but this is NOT the case. I am very accustomed to Ford's design for ignition modules on the side of the distributor, but this one is unusual. It is NOT on the side. Haynes and the internet imply that it may be elsewhere on certain models, and that is the situation here. Its just that I cannot find that hiding place. Any experience with finding it in other locations?

Answer
That is a new one on me.When I look at the distributor for you're car it shows the mount.I have a 1994 Thunderbird w/ the 3.8 and it has it.When I go to look it up on any parts store website they all list the distributor mounted. For the sake of argument, say it is distributor mounted, you will probably need to go to the dealership to get one.Or you're local parts pro can cross reference one if he knows what it looks like.Regardless,it cannot be very far from the distributor.
