Ford Repair: high idle, intake plenum, vlave

Question
Dennis I own a 1988 ford van and it currently has an extremely high idle and I would like to know what are some things I could do to fix this problem without spending extra money. I am very comfortable around car and would appreciate any advice you could give me

Answer
It helps a lot if you include the engine in your question. Look for anything that would cause unmetered air entering the intake, even a broken or cracker air duct house. The v8s were common for vaccum leaks at the throttle body and intake plenum, some even the egr will leak. Check the idle control vlave for sticking, especially when cold.
