Ford Repair: 91 Ford Escort not starting, auto zone, ford escort

Question
I was in a drive thru the other day when my escort is idle and everything is fine and it suddenly dies. The power seems to be low as the interior lights are dimming fast. I try to start it but it wont even turn. I end up putting it in neutral and pushing it to a parking space. I get a car to jump me off and it starts fine then, however, as soon as I disconnect it from the powering car (even after extended amounts of time attached) it dies immediately. I was thinking it might be the alternator but I don't know for sure and don't really have the money to get it checked out.

Answer
The good news is that parts stores like Advance and or Auto Zone offer this free of charge. It probably is you're alternator, but have them check it before you buy the new one. You're battery must be fully charged prior to installation of the new alternator.
