Ford Repair: Ranger engine swap, diy mechanic, bearer of bad news

is it feasible, economical to replace '91 ranger (2.3L)engine with engine from '99 ranger?  I am competent diy mechanic, but very little experience with '96 & newer vehicles.

It will probably not be economical.The 99 model 4cyl. is a 2.5 compared to you're 2.3.You need the complete wiring harness,computer,all applicable sensors,etc.I cannot speak with certainty whether or not you're transmission will even work.Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
