Ford Repair: 83 mark 6 fuel trouble, inertia switch, fuel pump relay

Question
QUESTION: Hi Dennis,ok I traced the no gas as you said I started at the throttle body, the line in,then back to the out side of the filter, then the in side ,no fuel and when I turn the key on gas should have came out of the line right?I mean from there the line is at the tank or pump.so now is there a fuse or something I can check before I drop the tank again,as I said I only have about a 1000 miles on this pump,OH I know new ones go bad also I just hope its a fuse or something,Thanks again.

ANSWER: Back in the day, we had a lot of trouble with relays. I suggest you check the fuel pump relay, it is under the hood on the right fender, inside. There are two relays there, find the one with two pink and black wires, this is the fuel pump relay. With a test light or voltmeter, have someone turn the key on while you probe these two wires, one of them goes towards the fuel pump. With the key on you should have voltage at both of these pink/black wires,  although for only a few seconds once the key is on, so don't expect the voltage to stay on. If you only have voltage on one of the pink wires, replace the relay.

If you have voltage on both of those wires, check the inertia switch in the trunk, mounted on the left hinge support. Push down on the button in the top of the inertia switch, if it clicks and stays down, then you should have power to the fuel pump. You can check for voltage the same way at this switch as you did at the relay. If you have power on both wires at this switch, the next check is at the fuel pump connector, underneath in front of the fuel tank.

I'm betting on the relay. If you have no voltage on either pink/black wire, check for a broken fusible link at the starter relay.

QUESTION: Hi Dennis well I checked the relay with a test light as you said, only not 2 pink and 2 blk,had 1 red-1red white line -1 blk -1 brown with blk line, also you said test light would only stay on a few seconds, well it stayed on as long as I had the kek on for both wires, the other relay was 1 red 1 yewwolbrown line-11 orange -1light brown,so I am sure I had the right one there is only two or the right fender,so now what that the test light stayed on?? Thanks so much, this is one heck of a hobbie you took up when you retired LOL

Answer
Did you find the inertia switch in the trunk? Confirm the wire colors there because I think the relay you checked is for something else. Ford was/is good about that, telling us the relay is here, when it is actually THERE! If the wires on the inertia switch are pink w/black stripe, then you will need to find a relay with that color wire under the hood and recheck it. I am pretty sure the fuel pump wires are pink/black.

Guess again, I retired from Ford, not from the business tho. I broke my left ankle in 2005 and things like this website kept me occupied and the brain working while recovering. Wish I was retired for good.
