Ford Repair: 1998 F150 Will not shift out of 4WD, transfer case, pcm

1998 F150 will not shift out of 4WD  Shift motor work when 12 volts is put directly to it will not work with shift mode on dash

Answer
First you should check the PCM and GEM for codes that might lead yo to the correct tests. Even tho the motor will operate when powered directly, there may be a sensor problem. The motor has plates and sensors in it that move with the position of the transfer case/motor, one of these may be bad. When you power it directly you bypass these sensors.

Do the 4X4 switch lights blink or flash? This is an indication of a problem.
