Ford Repair: 1991 Ford Mustang 5.0 LX Transmission, overdrive transmissions, overdrive band

Question
My transmission has started slipping in OD. Other gears appear OK. What should I do?

Answer
John-

The weak link in most overdrive transmissions (especially Ford's AOD) is the overdrive band.  It's what keeps the transmission in overdrive and it's not uncommon for it to go bad and start letting OD slip, especially in a 16 year old car.  My guess is that you'll have to get it replaced or, if you're feeling adventurous, rebuild the transmission.  That is, unless you can live without OD in which case it's not a big deal at all.  Hope this helps.
