Ford Repair: 98 explorer, upper intake manifold, manifold gaskets

Question
i'm looking into buying a 98 explorer with 88k on it
what are areas of concern i should be looking into ? like timing belt? that worries me i hear its  costly to do? transmissinion issues? front end? please advise!

Answer
Hello Dan,
There are some things to keep in mind, but they are common to just about anything you buy. If it does not have new spark plugs, wires, and fuel filter, those are some things that should be replaced soon. Upper intake manifold gaskets are common to need replacement around that mileage also. There is no timing belt, so don't worry about that. Also, coolant strength and condition(if questioned, just replace) should be kept up on. Front end problems aren't common, because it is a rack and pinion type with very few moving parts to wear. Any late model car has the possibility of trans. problems, so just keep up on the maintenance and keep your fingers crossed. I have seen alot fewer trans. failures in that year range versus ones that are older and newer, so I wouldn't worry too much.
Good luck with whatever you buy!   Shaun.
