Ford Repair: 96 Mercury Cougar, speedometer cable, mercury cougar

Question
I recently bought this car for my son.  It was in the daytime. After having it checked out..only the rear shocks needed repair. I also changed the engine and trans fluids/filters and it seems to be a good first car. He has discovered that the light on the speedometer doesn't work. The equipment is analog and the tach light works ok.

I'm writing to ask if you have any advice.. before I embark on taking the dashboard off, only to discover there was a much easier to way.. after I have it all torn apart. :)

Thank you for your time and consideration.
David

ps: I'm a software engineer.. and I do what I can to maintain/fix cars.. But here's a riddle you might get a kick out of.

Q: How many programmers does it take to change a light bulb?
A: None.  That's hardware. They can't fix hardware.

Thanks again.

Answer
Hello David,
I first must say, the joke is funny and I can relate. I am good with computer hardware, but horrible with software.
If you have only parts of the instrument cluster lighting up, then one or some of the bulbs are burned out. They are just a standard #194 bulb, but you do have to remove the gauge cluster to replace them(probably 6 total). Not overly difficult to do, but it's easy to break delicate plastic components if not grasped and pryed on correctly or if all of the screws aren't removed. You will find that there are very little screws, just spring-type pins that make you think you are really breaking something. That particular model isn't super hard, so you can try. There is no speedometer cable, so the cluster just has 3 elect. connectors. If you need to follow up, feel free, and I will be able to answer faster this time, sorry.
I hope this info helps, and good luck!   Shaun.
