Ford Repair: rear (crank?) seal bad, ford bronco xlt, crankshaft seal

Question
i have a 1994 5.0 ford bronco xlt that has a progressively worsening oil leak and was told my rear (crank?) seal needed replaced. (i freakin hate advance auto, most of em are morons around here.) were the morons right and how do i do it?

Answer
Hello Stacy,
It is more likely that the oil pan gasket is leaking, rather that the rear crankshaft seal. To change the oil pan gasket is quite a bit of dirty work on your back, which I don't recommend trying. If it is the rear main seal, the transmission assembly must be partially removed and the flywheel/flexplate needs to be taken off, because the seal is one piece. Either way, you are looking at quite a bit of time and money, sorry.
You might try to look around for some competent shops that seem honest, rather than using any chain-type repair facilities.
I hope this info helps, and good luck!   Shaun.
