Answer
Jeannie-

Dirty oil, huh?  That's a new one.  Sometimes I'm amazed by what dealers will tell people.  I'd say your problem is likely one of two things.  Either the timing could be off or you've got some carbon build-up in your engine.  Timing issues on modern cars isn't nearly as common as it used to be, but it's still possible.  When timing is off it causes the ignition to try and light the gas/air mixture too early or too late and pistons don't like that.  Carbon build-up is a bit trickier.  Sometimes when carbon builds up in the combustion chaber of an engine it can raise the engine's compression ratio because there is less room in the cylinder.  This can cause the gas to become unstable when compressed and spontaneously combust causing detonation.  And trust me, anyone who tells you that detonation is a characteristic of any car is just avoiding telling you they don't know what's wrong.  Detonation can be very harmful to any engine and no company would risk spending a lot of money in warranty work by putting an engine with known problems into a car.  I'd suggest taking it to an independent shop (certainly not back to the "dirty oil" dealership) and have them look it over.  Simply tell them what you told me and see what they have to say.  Hope this helps.
