Ford Repair: 1996 Ford Explorer Steering rack leak, wheel alignment, rubber components

Question
My mechanic just inspected my Explorer (it passed)and told me that my steering rack has a leak.  He said it is not something that is urgent right now but he wouldn't take it on any long trips. I have asked him what needs to be done. He said he will get back to me. Can it be repaired or does it have to be replaced? What do you think I am looking at price wise for the cost to repair (roughly).

Answer
Hello Keith,
When a rack and pinion is leaking, it should be replaced, rather than attempting to overhaul it. He is right when saying it isnt urgent, but the steering fluid can really damage rubber components on the underbody long term. Depending on mileage, I would replace the outer tie-rod ends also, because they are transferred onto the replacement unit.
I ran a retail quote of about what we would charge to replace it with a reman. Motorcraft rack : right around $650-700. The vehicle also needs to have a wheel alignment performed afterwards. Good luck!    Shaun.
