Ford Repair: 1973 T bird ac, vhs these days, older cars

Question
Hey Steve, I was wondering if you might weigh in on a question regaurding my 73 Tbird. I just bought it. It has a 460c.i. with 22,000 original miles! The car is really nice and totally stock. Well the question: The air needs charging , can you tell me the capacity of r12 this vehicle holds. Also just for curiosity What are your thoughts on converting these older cars to the newer refrigerant. Most people seem to think it is not good.

Answer
Don-

Sorry, but I don't have any tech books going back anywhere near '73 so I don't know how much refrigerant your car takes.  Honestly I would convert the car to R134a.  R12 freon is getting more and more expensive and fewer and fewer are being licensed to work with it.  It's kind of like VHS (R12) vs. DVD(R134a).  If you really had to get something on VHS these days you probably could, but it's just easier and probably cheaper to get a DVD.  Hope this helps.
