Ford Repair: 73 Mustang fuel?, sudden death syndrome, model ford

Question
My 73 Mustang recently developed sudden death syndrome. It will start fine and within a second or so the engine will quit. All the lights are on and turning the start key again sometimes will start the engine up again, for a second or so. Any idea what my problem might be? I thought it might be a fuel pump and took out my old faithful "Motor" auto repair manual. But I cannot find a diagram of where the fuel pump is? If my problem lies with the fuel pump, could you also instruct me where it is?  Many advanced thanks & best regards.

Jerry...........

Answer
Jerry, to locate the fuel pump, step in front of the car with the hood open.  The fuel pump will be on the right side (driver's side) of the engine.  It will be on the lower part of the block, approximately 8 inches back from the harmonic balancer.  Now, the best way to diagnose the fuel pump is to take some starting fluid and spray it into the carb.  If the engine starts and runs every time you do this, then the odds are that the fuel pump, or fuel filter, needs replacing.  If that doesn't work, then I would look at the ignition system.  Start with the ignition coil.  I have answered questions about diagnosing older model ford electrical problems, so read some of my past answers (they will apply to your car).  If you have anymore questions let me know,   Jason
