Ford Repair: ford 5.0 to 4.6l swap, overhead cams, stroker kit

Question
i have a 86 bronco with a 302 i would like to put a 4.6l i have into it, can you tell me if the engine mounts will line up with out fabrication? i have been told that a 4.6l is just a 289 block with overhead cams, but im not sure if this is true.  thank you

Answer
Adam-

No, the 4.6L won't bolt up to 5.0L mounts.  I've seen 5.0L-4.6L swaps in a few cars and they all required some replacement of suspension parts.  In reality, the old 289 motors and the 4.6L have almost nothing in common (other than that they're both V8s).  Their size is similar...4.6 liters comes to about 281 cubic inches, but their dimensions are quite different.  For instance 4.6L motors are pretty wide motors.  In fact I think that will be the limiting factor in such a swap...size.  If the motor will fit well into the engine bay then everything else can be fabricated to work around it.  Honestly, if it were me, I'd stick with a 5.0L based motor.  If you want more power you could always build a stroker kit or even step up to a 351W a lot easier than dropping in a 4.6L.  The 4.6L motors aren't known for making big torque down low in the rpm range which is exactly where a heavy vehicle like a Bronco would need power.  Hope this helps.
