Ford Repair: Massive leak from oil filter, ford bronco ii, oil pressure gauge

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1987 Ford Bronco II, but i belive any info will help, When the oil filter was changed along with the oil and the truck start she will run fine for about a minute and then a massive oil leak spit to the top of the truck, i have traced the leak to the oil filter, filter has been check and replaced with the same effects and at this point i am at a loss. What could it be, how can i fix it? HELP, THX
ANSWER: Craig, first I would make sure that you getting the right oil filter.  I have had people tell me they need an oil filter for a Bronco, and I just naturally think they mean full size.  Of course, when I ask what size motor, I realize they are talking about the Bronco II.  Assuming you have the right filter, did you make sure that the O-ring that came off the old filter did not stick on the oil filter plate?  Many times the O-ring will stick to the motor, and if you don't look to make sure it came off with the filter...... splish, splash.  Also, did are you watching your oil pressure gauge?  If it is going through the roof, then you might have a sending unit that has went bad and it just looks like it is springing from the oil filter.  Or, you might be over filling the crankcase.  I hope this helps,   Jason

QUESTION: Ok, i have double checked the filter type and  the o-ring- all good, but i forgot to mention that the transmission is FUBAR,( in need of repairs) would that also have some contributing factors. I also am wondering how would i go about check the oil pressure, I only have a TEMP gauge on the dash?

Answer
Craig, I am guessing that you are prior, or current, military.  The transmission shouldn't have anything to do with the oil filter blowing oil.  An easy fix for your oil pressure gauge is to stop by your local parts store and pick up an aftermarket gauge.  A nice looking gauge shouldn't cost more than 20 bucks, and it will have everything that you need to make it work.  You can run a mechanical gauge in about 10 minutes and you will be able to find out what your pressure is.  I hope this helps,   Jason
