Ford Repair: engine identification number, vin decoder, 6 digits

Question
I cannot find the location of the engine number for my mustang lx 2.3 1988. I have been told that the last 6 digits of the vin is the engine number.  Is this true ? where is the engine numbert located on the block?

Answer
Charles-

It's a lot more reliable to check the engine code stamped on the block.  While it's true you can figure out which engine you have using the VIN with a VIN decoder, it's not always reliable since the engine may have been replaced (unless you're the original owner of the car).  The engine ID should be stamped on the block on the passenger's side rear just above the starter.  It'll look something like E8AE-6015-XX (the "XX" will be other digits, but the code will start with a letter-number-letter-letter and should be followed by "6015" since that's Ford's code for engine blocks).  Hope this helps.
