Ford Repair: accelerator? problem, accelerator cable, throttle valve

Question
QUESTION: When changing gears the engine is still revving even though my foot is off the accelerator and the clutch is down and sometimes the car still drives when my feet are not on any peddles at all. Could you help?
ANSWER: June, it sounds like your accelerator cable is sticking.  Try spraying some PB Blast down the cable (from under the hood where it hooks up with the throttle valve body), and work it back and forth.  You can pick up a new cable at any parts store.  Depending on the year, make and model, it should not cost more than 40 dollars.  It is a simple job to replace it.  I hope this helps,   Jason

QUESTION: Thank-you for your suggestion, I will try this although being in England I'm not sure if we have PB Blast. Would this be a lubricant that is similar to WD40?

Answer
I see.    : )   Yes WD-40 would be a good lubricant.  When you disconnect your cable, and pull it back and forth, try and judge if it is locked up or not.  If it feels like it is smooth, then push on your throttle valve body where the cable hooks up.  See if it is hard to push on, or locked up.  There should be some resistance, but it should not hang up.  If it does, spray some lubricant on it and work it back and forth.  Like I said, if the cable acts like it is locking up, it might be better to replace it because it is likely to have frayed on the inside of the sheath.  Let me know if you have any more problems.  Good luck,  Jason
