Ford Repair: Ford 302 engine ID, ford 302 engine, galaxy line

Question
Any idea why the 3/8" bolts are loose in the threaded bell housing holes in the block? It seems that the holes are oversize or the bolts are undersize. Did Ford use a special bell housing bolt in 1968.
Thank you very much for the information received.

-----Question-----
My brother is rebuilding a 1968 Cougar and has a 302 cubic inch engine. 3/8" bolts are very loose in the flywheel (bell housing) housing cover holes in the block. The block casting is C8AE-6015-B and just under this number is 8A25. We are trying to identify the block. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks

Bruce-

That could very well be the originaly block from that car.  I can tell you that the block was cast on January 25th, 1968 and that it's a 302 from the Galaxy line (which doesn't mean it couldn't have found it's way into a Cougar...model codes are imprecise at best since many engines were shared between makes and models).  Hope this helps.

Answer
Bruce-

Honestly, I have no idea why the bolts would be loose.  I suppose there's any one of a dozen reasons with a block that old.  To my knowledge there's nothing really special about the '68 bell housings or the bolts.  You might just experiment with different bolt sizes until you find one that fits.  Hope this helps.
