Ford Repair: Security System, ford contour, immobilizer system

Question
I recently just bought a 1999 Ford Contour, actually it was this past Saturday. Anyways, about three hours after buying the car, it stalled on me at the mall. A red light was flashing. The next morning I went to the mall to pick up the car, and she started right up. No problem, but when I went to get a copy of the key made, they said that there was a chip in it. I'm assuming that there's some kind of security system on this car, but how do I disable it? I was told about a reset button but I cannot find it. Recently I would leave the key in the ignition for a few seconds, then start her and she fires up. How do i disable this feature?

Answer
Hi Fela thanks for asking.
Unfortunately the immobilizer system can not be removed. It is part of the power train control module on these. There is a chip in every key for theses vehicles. So everytimes a key is cut it has to be progammed by the dealer to be used in your vehicle. Each key has a resistance chip in it and when the ignition system detects the right resistance on the key it willl allow the vehicle to start. the red light flashing is a security light. My advice to you is get another key cut by the dealer and let them program it, when we program a key, we have to erase all the ex keys that are programmed and start over again, so make sure you bring all other keys with you. I have seen a couple of times where the key just hasnt worked. which will cause the vehicle not to start and the light to flash. The labor charge for key programing is  .5 of an hour.. so half of the dealers hourly shop rate. See if this works for you.
