Ford Repair: 95 thunderbird transmission, changing transmission fluid, worst case scenario

Question
when i am driving the transmission shift in to second gear kind of hard and i was wondering what would cuse that

Answer
Wendell-

Well, normally I'd recommend changing transmission fluid, but in this case it might cause more problems.  Generally when a transmission is about to give up on you 2nd gear is the first to go.  The problem with changing transmission fluid now is that it could help or it could ruin the transmission faster.  The reason is that during operation over time transmissions will develop a sort of varnish on gears, seals, etc.  Transmission fluid contains detergents to get rid of this varnish.  The problem is that sometimes this varnish actually covers up problems like pluging leaks and when new fluid is introduced the leaks unplug and trouble ensues.  Normally I recommend that people take the risk, but it's important to know the risk so you know the worst case scenario.  Hope this helps.
