Ford Repair: fuel injector replacement, diesel injectors, diesel shop

Question
My truck has been sitting for 3 years and I either need to replace or somehow fix 7 leaking fuel injectors. I have already replaced the glow plugs and the glow plug relay. (when I parked it it was hard to start when cold) could you let me know the procedure for the fuel injectors and also what to do to replace the fuel filter. Thanks

Answer
Scott,

I assume your truck is a diesel since gas engines don't use glow plugs. If it is an old 6.9L or early 7.3L they are easy to change. Just unhook the lines and then use a socket to unthread the injector out of the cylinder head. Most diesel injectors can be re-built far cheaper than replacement. Look in the phone book for a heavy truck diesel shop and call them. Sometimes they have exchange injectors available also.

Be sure to check that your glow plugs are actually getting power. The old 6.9L controllers were problematic. I have installed the newer 7.3L glow plug controller on these engines with good success.

Hope that helps.
