I feel that the car is using an excessive quantity of gas and wonder what could be causing it?

There are several things that can cause your Sable to use more gas. The first would be how long ago was a good tune-up done with both spark plugs and wires. Also check the air filter and oil levels. Tire pressure should be checked.  Ask a good mechanic about replacing both your front oxygen sensors. They have an average life of 5 years so I would replace them as a maintenance item even if there are no codes for it.  Another item is to make sure the engine is fully warming up to temperature. A cold engine will use more gas.
