Ford Repair: ignition timing, cracked heads, coil pack

Question
I have a 91 explorer with a 4.0 liter and a 5 speed. On starting its ignition timing must be out. It sometimes pops through the intake and often stalls the starter motor. What do I do???
Many Thanks RJ

Answer
Richard,

Doesn't this truck have a coil pack ignition? I would start by making sure you don't have a bad plug wire arcing to another and firing the wrong cylinder. Also, be careful to check for coolant in the cylinder causing the starter to lock up. 4.0 is known for cracked heads.
