Hello, we just picked up our vehicle from the shop.  They changed out fuel and air filter, 8 spark plugs, 8 coil boots, and 2-ignition coils.   We were charged 904.00 for this tune up!  Does this seem reasonable to you?  I have priced the parts and they were alot less than charged.  Please advise.  Thank you

Kim-

Well...it sounds high to me, but I'd have to look at the invoice.  Any time you get work done at any shop they should give you an itemized invoice of how much you've been charged and what they've charged you for.  Plus you have to remember that all shops mark up prices on parts.  For instance...if a set of 8 spark plugs costs $50 at a parts store, you could easily pay double that for a shop to install them.  I remember a few years back reading that standard industry mark up was 300% (I'm not sure if that's still the case, but stuff definitely gets marked up noticeably).  Even with that in mind, almost a grand for what's mostly $20-$30 parts?  Sounds excessive to me.  Even if they'd spent 10 hours doing the tune up (far longer than it should take), you'd only be looking at roughly $600 in labor.  If you can give me an idea of what the invoice says I can give you a better take on things.  Hope this helps.

Answer
Kim-

Ok...I see the problem.  They went crazy with the spark plug and coil boot pricing.  I mean jeez...darn near $13 per spark plug?  That's pretty ridiculous.  I'm also a bit surprised that they charged $15 per coil boot.  It looks like the ignition coils were a big part of that...but those can get expensive.  Maybe not $100-a-pop expensive, but that's not nearly as bad as a $13 spark plug.  The labor looks a bit high to me, but I don't know what that particular shop charges so it could easily be 3 or 4 hours of work.  I'd recommend buying a Chilton's manual and doing your own tune ups from now on (with the possible exception of the fuel filter...those things are tough to get off).  Hope this helps.
