Ford Repair: numbers, mustang owners, 6 cylinders

Question
hey Steve, me and my buddy just got a 1966 mustang with what we wer told was the original 289 that it came with, but we have sence talked to some other mustang owners that think otherwise. the engine is a 2bolt main with the numbers (C6AE-6015-C) and (6B23) just below it. it would be a HUGE help if you could decode this.

Answer
Daniel-

Sounds to me like the numbers match.  There's really no way it's a 302 because 302s weren't produced until 1967 so it would have to carry a C7 casting number.  Aside from that, the only V8 used in Mustangs in 1966 was the 289.  You could have that or two other motors, both were 6 cylinders.  So I think that's pretty definitely to the effect that he's got the correct motor for the car.  It might not be the exact motor that came with the car, but it's correct for the year.  Hope this helps.
