Ford Repair: 1995 ford explorer sport starter, ford explorer sport, fly wheel

Question
replaced starter in my truck when i pulled the old starter out the end that meets the flywheel was broken. so i put the new one in and the same thing happened.i then put a socket on the crank pully and spun it nothing was siezed and the fly wheel looked to be ok.what could be wrong i don't want to break another one.

Answer
Did you break the drive gear or the starter housing? Haven't seen this happen myself. Make sure of the mounting alignment and that the starter is flush against the bellhousing. And turn the crankshaft far enough to be sure it isn't binding on something broken.
