Ford Repair: 89 E-250 SD, spark plug wires, smog tests

Question
Hi Dennis, Van ran great until vegas heat came. Now after a short period van stalls out. Same symptoms as running out of gas , backfire etc. comp seems to get hot (one side) but nothing to compare to. When van cools (30 min)runs but not long. engine never above 195deg. replaced front fuel pump seems to be getting plenty fuel and pressure. I got the 5.8 with c-6 (no OD) Can't find new ecc (Ford quit making this one 5 years ago) I am now thinking of switching to carb and reg (old like me) ignition parts, any help would be great, and do you know if I can successfully run carb , etc on this engine. thank you Greg

Answer
I suspect you have a failing ignition module. Not hard to replace and relatively inexpensive. May also need the stator inside the distributor. Inspect the spark plug wires for arcing, common on the 5.8 Fords, especially vans.
Maybe spark plugs too, and use motorcraft or autolite if you can find them.

Did you actually check fuel pressure with a guage or just visual?

Switching to carb is not a good idea. You will have problems with smog tests, and not have the same performance as fuel injection. Too many things to change to retro fit this vehicle. It can be done, but all the engine controls are computerized, you would have to change everything and probably the camshaft.
