Ford Repair: 2002 mustang rear brakes, caliper pistons, rear brakes

Question
I am trying to compress the rear calipers on a 2002 mustang, 3.8 V6. I can not get the calipers to compress. I feel it might have something to do with the emergency brake cable. Can you tell what I am missing or what trick there is to compressing the rear calipers.
Thank you so much,
Steve

Answer
Steve-

This is actually one of the most common questions I get.  Mostly because I think people expect the rear brakes to work just like the fronts and they don't.  The front caliper pistons just push back in, but the rear pistons need to be screwed back in to retract.  Don't ask me why...virtually ever car and truck with rear discs uses this system.  There should be a little protruding piece of metal at the center of the caliper...a "nipple" if you'll forgive the term.  If you're creative you can use common tools to use it to screw the piston back in.  If you don't want to waste time fooling with it and have about $10 burning a hole in your pocket, there's a special attachment you can buy at auto parts stores that will do it quick and clean.  If you already knew that the rear calipers screwed in, disregard everything I typed.  If that's the case, the caliper is probably frozen and it's time to rebuild it or buy a new one.  Hope this helps.
