Ford Repair: 1978 crank in a 1987 5.0L block., seal surface, seal design

Question
Just a quick question; if I want to install a 1978 302 crankshaft into a 1987 5.0L roller block, aside from having to use the 28oz. imbalance equipment, is there anything else I have to do?  Do I have to machine off the lip on the front of the rear main seal surface (1987 crank doesn't have this lip)?

Answer

You know, to be perfectly honest, I've never tried interchanging cranks when one was a one piece rear main seal design while the other was a two piece ream main design.  Seems like an interesting experiment, though I'm sure that's not what you were going for.  If it's something you're going to try, I'd definitely machine the lip off of the '78 crank.  On the plus side, even if it doesn't work, even a brand spankin' new crank for an '87 5.0 shouldn't cost any more than $200.  Hope this helps.
