Hello Dennis! I have a question about my brakes. A few months ago my brakes made a loud continous squeaking noise when I applied the brakes. This only happened when i lightly applied the brakes under 30mph. I replaced the pads with new ones from Advance Auto and they appeared to be ok, then the squeak came back. Again its only under 30-35mph and on dry days. Not sure if it matters but it is not that light squeaking like shoes on a basketball court, its like a loud annoying chalk on the blackboard sound. Any advice you can offer is greatly appreciated!
Answer -
Brake pads come in all qualities and prices. If you used a hard, cheap pad, it will make noise. Did you machine the rotors when you replaced the pads? If not that is most likely why you are getting noise. I suggest looking at them at least to make sure something isn't loose or rubbing that shouldn't be.
Answer -
Machining, turning, truing, all apply to resurfacing the rotors to provide a clean, smooth surface for the pads to grab. This is done either on or off the vehicle by most shops as part of a brake job. This is provided there is enough thickness in the rotor to make it usable. The minimum specs are stamped on the inside of the rotor.

Answer
No, I don't know of any place that will do this type of work for no charge. If your pads are new you can ask them to reuse them, many places won't guarnatee their work in that case. I recommend you stay away from most of the chain auto repair stores, they tend to oversell.

If you can replace brake pads, you can certainly remove the rotors yourself. Many auto parts stores have equipment to machine rotors if you can get them off and take the rotors in.
