Ford Repair: repair side view mirror, mercury sable, mirror work

I have a mercury sable GS 2000 4 door car.  Recently I hit another mirror and my passenger side mirror came off.  The glass is not broken, the automatic features of the mirror work fine, the entire mirror is intact with the exception that it is dangling from it's socket.  My question...how can I put it back in it's orginal socket??

I'm trying to picture how this mirror could be broken off and put back in place. Every time I have seen this happen something plastic is broken making the mirror useless. Without physically seeing where it is broken I don't know what to tell you. These mirrors are designed to fold back if necessary, but not come apart and put back together.
