Ford Repair: 93 Escort overheated, blown head gasket, heater hoses

Question
While driving home my Escort LX (1.9) began to overheat.  I was very near home and made it without getting into the red zone of the gauge.
I found that a pvc joint in one of the heater hoses had cracked causing a loss of some coolant.  Repaired the leak and topped it off.  Now runs cool but but a little rough and there is white smoke coming from the tailpipe. Checked the oil and it is a little milky.  After reading some of your other posts, I'm guessing that I blew the head gasket.
Since that repair would probably exceed the value of the car...  What are your feelings about those additives that claim to plug these type leaks?  Any good at all?  Any other ideas?
Thanks very much for your time.

Answer
Nancy-

Yeah...it definitely sounds like a blown head gasket.  Honestly, I don't even really consider those additives options.  They *might* allow your car to limp along for a while, but eventually they'll start to cause problems of their own.  The only real fix is a new gasket.  Perhaps it's time to start evaluating how much you want to keep that car around if it's going to cost more than blue book value to fix it.  Hope this helps.
