Ford Repair: Transmission shifting / cruise control problem, speedometer cable, shift linkage

Question
-------------------------
2nd Follow up info - they put it on a Snap On scanner and got 2 codes:
The top code was "452 open vehical speed sensor circuit"
The bottom code was "634 manuel lever position sensor (MLP) out of range"
I hope this helps. Thanks

Follow up info - The people at the shop claimed they replaced the sensor and it did not help. I disconnected the wires on the rear end sensor, drove the van and the speedometer stopped working. The only wires comming from the transmission are from behind the shift linkage arm (neutral start switch) and from the case on the passenger side above where the valve body would be. The hole in the tail shaft housing (where the speedometer cable would go) is blocked off. The brake lights work. I pulled the speedometer out and there is a module behind it that looks like it should be in a computer. It is a printed circuit board with micro chips on it. My wiring diagram shows something called a programable speedometer/odometer module. I could not see any evidence of hot spots or damage but could not test it any further. Is there a way I could test it? I will try to get the van scanned again so we can get the code.
Thanks for your help.

I have a 1992 E-350 Club Wagon with approx. 147,000 miles on it. It has the automatic trans. with over drive. The transmission shifting points moved up approx. 10 to 15 mph faster and the cruise control stopped working at the same time. The higher shifting points is especially noticable when slowing down with over drive engaged. The speedometer works perfectly. The cruise control is electric, no vacumn involved. The fuse is ok.
I took it to a transmission shop and they checked it but did not repair it. They advised the code showed the computer was not receiving vehical speed data. The sensor on the rear end is working and they thought the problem was "behind the dash" and they did not do that work. Nothing looks loose or burnt that I can see. Any ideas ?
Thanks

Did this shop tell you what code they have? That will help me to know the code. Are you sure there isn't a vehicle speed sensor on the trans? I don't have manuals that old, but I think the sensor on the rear end is for the rear anti lock brakes.

If your speedo still works then most likely you are losing the signal to the PCM.

How did this shop know the speed sensor is working?

Another thing that will cause the cruise control to stop would be lack of brake lights.

I know there were plenty of problems with those PSOM, as we called them. I don't have a schematic to help, however it could be that the speed signal goes to the speedo first and is then transmitted to the PCM. I still think that if the PCM doesn't receive this signal it can mess up the cruise control and the shifting patterns. Let me know if there are any codes.

Answer
OK, I don't have schematics for this year, but I did check the diagnostic manual and found code 452 indicates "insufficient input from VSS to PCM". This is pretty much what I suspected, but I would like you to pursue the 634 code first.

The manual lever sensor being out of range can really screw up the shift points, plus it is most likely this one is what we call a "hard fault", which means it is present during the self test. The 452 code is a memory code that could have happened at least once while driving, and could have been set when the van was driven with the VSS disconnected.

The MLP sensor could be out of adjustment, but in my experience most times the sensor needs to be replaced. This sensor sends a digital voltage signal to the PCM, and if the voltage is off by even .5 volts it can cause odd shifting, and sometimes a lack of shifting. This is where I suspect your problem is coming from.

What this has to do with the cruise control I don't yet know. Is this factory cruise, or added-on?
