Ford Repair: 75,000 mile service, inexperienced kid, ford mustang

Question
Dennis,

My 2001 Ford Mustang is up for its 75,000 mile service.  Is it worth it to go to the dealership to get the servicing done?

I live in a major metropolitan area and have many options, but, I'm willing to pay extra if the dealership is truly going to do a better job.

Answer
My advice is to go with the place you feel most comfortable with. The 75K service is not an extensive one.
Perhaps the question to ask yourself is do you want some young, inexperienced kid at a quick-lube place to service your vehicle, or a dealer tech who has more knowledge and time invested in knowing your car? And there is always the option of an independent garage. From what I see in the industry prices are fairly consistent for a basic service since everyone wants your business.

Do you have a regular shop you deal with and like? When I went to the dealership after years in the business I had several people follow me out of trust, which I had earned. I appreciated that and always suggest people find someone they feel comfortable with and think they can trust. There are many honest shops out there to compete for business, and some that will just as soon rip you off. Unfortunately that is not an easy thing to find out unless you patronize them.

Ask friends, neighbors, etc. who they go to, might be a good choice among those. Ask about the shops credentials. Look for ASE, ASA, BBB, NAPA and other certifications to find those who are professional enough to keep up with training and technology.

I hope I answered your question, I realize I got a little long-winded but always like to help consumers find a good shop to deal with. Good luck.
