Ford Repair: Gas Gauge on Windstar, ford windstar, gas gauge

Question
We have a 2000 Ford Windstar with about 72k miles.  Of course it just went out of warranty. The gas gauge stays on just below 1/2 tank while driving.  When it gets low the yellow light still comes on.  When I fill the tank, the gauge only goes to just below 1/2.  When I shut the car off the gauge goes all the way down.  What type of problem is this?

It is hard to know just what the problem is without checking for codes first. This is not a simple guage and sender problem, this vehicle doesn't have much on it that doesn't go thru an electronic module. You will need to have the systems checked for codes to have anything to go on as far as determing the problem.
