Ford Repair: od light, clutch slippage, electronic problems

Question
Ok dennis...wasnt gonna ask this since your not a tranny expert..but since you were so quick on the previous question ...here goes! 95 ford explorer xlt; the od light keeps flashing, and i hear a clunking nnoise when slowing down. The diagnosis at the trans shop said excessive clutch slippage and suggested changing fluid, filter, and an additive. Any clue as to would this help?

Answer
Is this a test or what? :)

If the od light is flashing it usually has something to do with electrical, as this transmission has electronic shifting. Did the shop tell you of any codes, or did they check that out? That is your best starting point.

Changing the fluid and filter is always a good idea. Is the fluid dark or smell burnt, then it needs changing anyway. If you don't know when the last change happened that is also a good reason to do it.

I don't recommend additives. Many of them will just make things worse, or cause other problems. If the fluid is real bad then a flush would be a good idea, although I don't like the products most shops use for that either. Flushing the fluid gets almost all of the fluid out of the system, whereas dropping thepan and filter only gets about 25% of the bad fluid out. See if you can get someone to just change the fluid with a flush machine rather than using the cleaners and additives.

You may encounter some argument over that as just about every tech has an opinion on these things.

If you can get the codes, let me know and I'll help if I can. Many times it is a loose connector or bad solenoid, but we need codes before any work. I haven't done major trans work, but I have fixed related electronic problems.

(Note: my response times are partly due to recovering from a broken ankle. I have plenty of free time lately!)
