Ford Repair: noise, ford explorer xlt, air control valve

Question
I have 95 ford explorer xlt. When starting the truck sometimes it makes a loud suction noise..almost like it has asthma. It will usually stop after putting it in gear and driving it for short distance. I changed the air filter but does not seem to help the noise. It also seems to be using more gas than usual.

Answer
Noises are best diagnosed after hearing them, but I have a couple of things for you to check.

Inspect the rubber snorkel between the air filter and the engine, make sure there are no holes or cracks. This will sometimes rub on the upper hose or the fan shroud and make a hole in the rubber.

See if you can tell where this noise is coming from on the motor. There were some problems with the Idle air control valve cracking internally and makes quite a racket.

Look around for a vacuum hose off, you should be able to hear that hot or cold. I will suspect the IAC valve since you state that it goes away after the engine warms up.

You are very welcome, I hope you can find the problem. Let me know.
