Ford Repair: Ignition Switches, ford products, key cylinder

Question
I apologize, of course here you go.  It's an 89 Tempo, automatic, floor shift with tilt steering.

Thanks

My ignition switch will not stay in the "Run" position.  I have replaced the lock cylinder and that was not the culprit.  Can you tell me what the cause is so I may replace the correct part?

Thank you.

I need some info on your vehicle, John. year, make, model, does it have a tilt wheel? column shift or floor shift? auto or stick?

anything at this point would be an inaccurate guess

Answer
Thanks John. There are just too many variables in Ford products to offer an opinion without some idea of what I am talking about.

On your vehicle I would suspect the ignition switch has either come loose or is broken inside. The switch is on the steering column about half way towards the floor. If you can get the switch off and then turn the key, see if it rotates freely.

I usually put the switch and key into the run position before mounting the switch. May take you a couple of tries but you'll know if it isn't timed right because the key will not line up. I have not seen too many problems with Tempos other than that. Could always be a problem between the switch of key cylinder, but I doubt it.
