Ford Repair: Speedometer/Odometer malfunction, autozone auto parts, auto parts stores

Question
I know this forum is for Fords, but I have a 2000 Mazda P/U which really is a ford in disguise, right?  Anyway, my engine light went on and my speedometer/odometer stopped working.  Could this be a simple loose connection that I could fix myself, or is it the result of some major electrical malfunction?

Answer
If the CEL is on, you will need to get the codes checked to know what the problem is. If your speedo is inop there is a good chance the problem is in the speed sensor. You can check the connection, it is on top of the differential. However, this is a common failure on Ford trucks.

FIRST, let's find out what codes are in the computer and start from there.I think most autozone auto parts stores are checking codes simply as a free service, if you have one near you.

DO NOT buy anything from them until you let a technician know the codes, or come back and tell me then we'll decide what you need, whether it's further diagnosis or a part.
A much too common mistake people are making is what we call "Throwing parts at the problem". It is better to know what you need than to start buying pieces hoping to fix it simply. It may be as simple as a speed sensor, it could be many other things also.
