Ford Repair: Escort tie-rod ends, tie rod ends, inner tie rod

Question
Hi,

I was told by a mechanic that my tie-rod ends
need to be replaced on my 1998 Escort. I called
the parts store to get a price and they referred
to inner and outer tie-rod ends. I was under the impression there is only one tie-rod end on each end of the tie rod. Can you clariify?

Also, the odometer stopped working and they are telling me it will cost $500 to fix because the entire instrument assembly/control unit will need
to be replaced. Is there a work-around for this?

Thanks!
Kenny

Answer
There is an outer tie rod end at the wheel end of each rod, probably what you are familiar with. The insde of the tie rod is connected to a plastic(nylon?)coupler that attaches to the steering gear, requires replacing what may commonly be called an inner tie rod. Where I have worked we called them spindle rods. Most Fords require a special tool to replace these, as well as removal of the dust boots. Of course an alignment will be required.

Did the mechanic happen to tell you which tie rods he recommended? That would help. Do you trust this particular shop/individual enough to go on their diagnosis, or should you get another estimate?

If the speedo is electronic , that cost may be accurate. I would like to know if they checked the speed sensor, those are much more common. How about a used cluster?
