Ford Repair: 2002 Focus Shift Inerlock, focus shift, volt meter

Question
Isn't there a switch on the brake lever that activates a relay to release the interlock to allow you to depress the button and move the shifter from park?

Intermittently I can not push in the button to move the shifter from Park to Drive when I step on the brake.  When this happens I have to push the manual release.  What and where do I need to check and/or replace to correct this problem?  I have a volt meter and electrical & mechanical know how.  Thanks for your help.

Sounds like you may have something fallen down in to the shifter area interfering with the mechanism. Or have you spilt coffee or soda into the shifter or console? At the worst there may be problem with the shift lever itself.

This would not involve the shift interlock I don't think, if that was the case the manual release wouldn't work either

Answer
Yes, the interlock is usually tied into the brake lights. That is a good thing to make sure the brake lights are working. Some vehicles you can hear the solenoid work when applying the brakes. In my time at the dealer I don't recall seeing problems in this area on the Focus, but anything is possible.
